5 Reasons Why You Should Become an Electrician

An electrician at work
The oil & gas industry is booming.  As such, there is a job shortage and America needs all the skilled workers it can find. Electricians are just one of the many trades in high demand today. Here are 5 great reasons why you should think about becoming an electrician, everything from job security to high-paying salaries.

1. Dynamic career

What we're talking about here is dynamic vs. static, meaning if you're the type of person who hates sitting at a desk or working in the same old store day after day, then becoming an electrician is the right career move for you. Electricians move where the job is, sometimes travelling throughout the state.  If you're the type who likes a change of scenery, working from job to job until completion, then becoming an electrician may just be the right job for you. They don't call them Journeymen for nothing.

2. Always in Demand

Even in a less robust economy, electricians are always in need. As a skilled electrician, you will be qualified to work in residential, commercial, even industrial settings. There's always new construction going on somewhere, in one field or another.  Repairs to existing structures are a consistent source of work as well. While a residential owner may forgo a professional landscaper and decide to cut his grass or tend his garden himself, few find it a wise choice to put their hands on hot electrical wiring. Monkeying around with electrical wires is best left to the professionals.

3. Job Security

A good electrician is hard to find.  Just like with any job it takes some time to become experienced and establish your reputation.  But once you do, you'll find your job as a qualified electrician is one of the most secure in the industry.  The IBEW, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, helps journeymen and master electricians alike to secure their job status and obtain the salary they deserve.

4. Shortage of Electricians

Getting back to the current oil & gas boom: there is always a shortage of good electricians, but never more so than now.  The current shale oil & gas boom in the US means there are more job openings than there are electricians to fill them.  By the laws of supply and demand, that means that finding good electrician jobs now is better than ever. With the explosive growth in China, natural resources are expected to be in high demand for decades to come.  Electricians are a crucial element in the production of these resources.

5. High Salaries

And this brings us to the best reason of all to get into the electrician field right now. For the all the reasons mentioned above, salaries for electricians have never been higher. While most electricians start out at around $40,000 per year (not bad for a beginning salary), top salaries in the field aright now are in the $85,000 range.  Some electricians with advanced skills are even reported to be making in excess of $100,000 per year.  In years past, only those with a college education made that kind of money.
