While the Bakken is still a viable play, output per well has dropped by 11 percent in the last two years. This at the same time that production in newer formations in North Dakota are up by as much as 79 percent.

While per well production is on the decline, productivity per well is on the rise for companies like Continental Resources, Whiting Petroleum, and the Hess Corporation.
